History

In the early 1970's a programme called Barnaby (the Bear) was shown. Until recently I thought I was the only person that remembered the programme.

Now it seems that he's been traveling the world and changing his name. Originally he was named 'Colargol' in france, but he has appeared all over the world using different names:

UK - Barnaby
Canada - Jeremy
Israel - Kolorgal
Holland / Norway - Colargol

Olga Pouchine created the Colargol stories for her son. Albert Barillé wanted to make a Children's Television series about Colargol. He tried to sell the idea to French TV, but they thought it would be too risky and expensive. So he decided to go it alone and hired Polish animator Tadeusz Wilkosz to make 52 episodes.

The UK version (Barnaby) was named after Colin Jeavons' eldest son. It was produced by Michael Grafton-Robinson, with the voices of Colin Jeavons, Charles Collingwood, Gwenllian Owen, Percy Edwards.

Story
Barnaby the bear lives in a pretty wood forest. He's a small bear cub who often arrives late at school. He would love to sing, but he has a terrible voice.

He makes friends with the birds and they introduce him to the King of the Birds. He gives Barnaby a magic whistle which makes his singing sound so lovely.

Barnaby joins the Pimoulu Circus, he makes lots of friends there and becomes a great success as 'Barnaby the Singing Bear'. Barnaby decides he wants to leave the Circus but Mr. Pimoulu doesn't want his 'Star of the Circus' to leave. So he decides to lock Barnaby up in a cage to stop him leaving! One of Barnaby's friends helps him escape.

On his adventures, he is accompanied by his friends - Hector (the rat) and Corbeau (the crow).

Barnaby wants to learn how to swim, but gets swept out into the sea. Eventually he gets picked up by a ship that is heading to the North Pole. They make him work very hard and so eventually escapes from the ship.

He befriends a penguin on the Polar Icecap, he also meets his girlfriend here, a polar bear called Nordine.

He eventually decides he wants to go to the Moon to see the Stars.
