In the early Eighties, Dogtanian and the Three
Muskehounds burst onto the scene and what a breath of
fresh air this program was. It steered clear of cartoons that
had a new story each week and instead opted to tell the
ongoing story of a young dog named Dogtanian and his
desire to become one of the King's trusted Muskehounds.
The Story was based on the Book by Alexander Dumas -
The Three Musketeers.
A total of 26 episodes were made.
Young Dogtanian is sent on a journey to Paris by his father
for training by his friend Monsieur Treville. On the way to
Paris on his trusty horse, Sandy, Dogtanian is insulted by a passing rider (called by
Dogtanian - the Black Moustache). Later that day Dogtanian catches up
with him and fights a duel. The Black Moustache cheats
and gets his squire and the innkeeper to knock him
senseless. They find a note on Dogtanian to
Monsieur Treville (Captain of the Kings Guard) and
the Black Moustache orders the Innkeeper to get rid
of the body (of Dogtanian) and rides off into the
Distance.
Luckily the Innkeeper does not kill Dogtanian and
instead takes all of his money for the damage to his inn
and keeps Sandy his horse until he can pay for the rest
of the damage. So poor Dogtanian walks towards Paris
carrying Sandy's Saddle.
On the way Dogtanian is splashed with mud by a passing coach (he is a lucky chap!) and chases
it for another apology. Inside he finds a beautiful girl called Juliet who he thinks is very beautiful.
Eventually Dogtanian makes it to Paris and gets in another fight and ends up bruised and
battered. He is found by Juliet, who lives in Paris, and takes him in and gives him shelter.
Dogtanian hears that one of the Three Muskehounds (Porthos) is stealing from the poor. Enraged
about this, he joins a mob to find Porthos. Athos and Aramis find out about this and try to clear
his name. It seems that Cardinal Richelieu is behind this and is trying to discredit the Kings
Guard, by employing someone to impersonate Porthos. They catch the imposter and clear his
name, but just as he is about to tell them who employed him, he is shot dead by Widermere who
is in charge of the Cardinals Guard.
Again Dogtanian gets in a fight, this time he is seen by Monsieur Treville, who
finds out that he's the son of his friend - Dogtanian's Father. He
talks to Dogtanian and hands him a sword that Juliet
asked him to give to Dogtanian.
Dogtanian's luck gets worse and he upsets the Three
Muskehounds and they challenge him to a duel. He
does so well and are impressed by him, so they
become good friends.
Together they battle against the Cardinal and his men
(who are trying to expose the Queen's friendship with the
English Prime Minister).
Dogtanian is a small puppy that comes from the village of Gascony. He
has been taught by his father to defend himself with a sword and his
ambition is to become one of the Kings Guard - a Muskehound.
Juliet is Dogtanian's love and she loves him too. She is the Queen of
France's Lady in Waiting and helps the queen send messages to the
Duke of Buckingham.
He is one of the Three Muskehounds and part of the Kings Guard. He is
very loud and loves to eat and drink, which you could probably guess by
the size of him.
Another one of the Three Muskehounds and part of the Kings Guard. He is the leader out of the three and thinks of the
consequences before they go into battle.
The third member of the Three Muskehounds and part of the Kings Guard. He is the romantic out of the three.
Cardinal Richelieu schemes to expose the Queen's friendship with the Duke of Buckingham, but is thwarted by Dogtanian
and the Three Muskehounds. His aim in life if to become the most important man in the whole of France and to kill the
Kings Guard - the Muskehounds
Count Rochefort is the right hand man of Cardinal Richelieu and performs most of his evil tasks. Dogtanian initially named
him 'The Black Moustache' before he found out his real name.
Milady is a professional Assassin. She is a master of disguise and charms most people with her sexy looks and manners.
But don't let this fool you, she would not hesitate to kill you instantly. This is one to steer clear of.
The Queen of France has a secret friendship with the Prime Minister of England - the Duke of Buckingham. The King of
France doesn't seem to interested in her, so this is the reason she looked elsewhere for friendship.
But Evil Cardinal Richelieu wants to expose this friendship and send France into a state of chaos.
He is in charge of Cardinal Richelieu's Guards. How did he get to this position?, because he is a bumbling fool. He never
gets anything right and is thought of as a joke by Cardinal Richelieu and Count Rochefort.
He was the stable boy at the inn where Dogtanian and the Black Moustache first fought. When Dogtanian was given some
money by the King of France, he returned to the Inn to pay the innkeeper the outstanding balance for the damage to the inn
and buy back Sandy, his horse.
Planchet and Dogatnian got on well together, so Dogatnian employed him as his Man Servant and he does a good job of
looking after Dogtanian.
He is Dogtanian's horse and was given to him by his father. Sandy isn't a young horse, but he is loyal and tries his best.
